HEALTH SCHOOL
CULTURE SCHOOL
The title was first presented to our school in 2009 and in 2013 we were given this honorary title again. The title is presented to schools which are culturally active. Our school thus performs various cultural activites including music, dance, art, singing, literature, journalism, drama, folklore etc. In the local environment the school is usually the only place where the cultural activites for the general public take place.
NETWORK OF SCHOOLS ŠKOCJAN CAVES PARK
This project includes schools in the valley of river Reka which disappears in Škocjan caves. Every year the pupils work one project with which they want to preserve cultural heritage of our ancestors e.g. in year 2012/2013 our pupils made a project about herbs (Zelišča nekoč in danes) Read more: http://www.park-skocjanske-jame.si/eng/
COMENIUS 2008-2010 – Myths, stories and legends of Europe
The partnership of the four schools from Slovenia, Italy, Spain and Madeira was based on the myths, stories and legends of Europe. Each participating partner tried to present its own myth, story and legend. Through this we aimed to show how the local environment influenced the cultural life i.e. stories, legends and myths. The first year of the project we worked on stories and legends. The work involved choosing one story and one legend that best presented the characteristics of the participating country. All partners exchanged their legends and stories at the meeting we had in March 2009 in Sevilla, Spain. The texts were then translated and the pupils presented these legends and stories in various ways, mostly drawings and paintings. All the stories and all the legends were published in the book that we presented at the end of the first year at a show that was held simultaneously at all four schools. The book is written in the languages of the participating countries as well as in English and decorated with pupils’ drawings. The second year of the project was dedicated to myths. Again, myths were exchanged at the meeting held in October 2009 in Slovenia. Pupils then worked on the myth from their own country and a dramatization was presented in April 2010. Each partner school worked on its own myth. At the end of the project we have also published a smaller book with all the four myths. Alongside the work connected with myths, stories and legends, the pupils have made and sent Christmas cards and Easter cards to pupils at all partner schools and in the second year they have communicated via letters. Because the aim of the project was to raise the European awareness and to include all the pupils and the teachers, children have also created posters on which they have presented geographical characteristics of all the participating countries, they learned about the distances between these countries, their national anthems, traditional food and clothing, etc. The work was adjusted to the age of the pupils, because the participating students at our school were from 6 to 15 years old. All this work was presented both at the end of the first was well as at the end of the second year of the project. Both these shows were open to the public.
COMENIUS 2013-2015 Growing and Developing as a European Citizen for the Future
We were in this project with partner schools from Sctoland, Poland, Turkey and Portugal. In order to address the specific concerns of inactive pupils and the relevant effects on their lifestyles and subsequent health, our project was designed to encourage pupils and the whole school community to become more active and consider more carefully how we can positively influence their lifestyle and encourage others to do the same. This was done through many collaborative projects including playground games, an examination of a healthy diet as well as using cultural activities e.g dance, culture, sports etc to encourage a more active lifestyle thereby improving health and becoming more effective citizens for the future. This was done through each school recognizing, highlighting and celebrating their own culture and presenting it to all of the other school communities through the use of both written materials, dance, music, sport, drawings, pictures, lifestyle activities and food emphasizing that our own culture can help keep us healthy and that we can use this to encourage others to do the same. Recording of the project was supported by a high use of ICT ranging from digital photography, video, internet, tv, email and blogging. This project also focused on the school community to think of its own cultural strengths and discover those of our partners in order to help address stereotyping, yet emphasizing similarities and differences across Europe.
The project was really well accepted among our pupils, their parents, local community and, of course, teachers. Students were especially eager to take part in mobilities and to host students from partner schools. We believe the community truly widened its horizons and became even more aware of the fact that being small is not necessarily a bad thing :-).
